A Prayer Sans Sense

Do not venture beyond my thirsty sight.
I feel lost in me.
I cry out like that tired traveller of a moonlit desert
on whose dry tongue is written the jibes of a mirage.
Now that you have come next to my dusty path,
don’t leave.

I need water!

Waves of life thrash me from all sides.
But their froth is brackish.
Under the soothing shades of your eyelashes
let me rest for a while.
Then I would have to rise again
to quench my thirst.
Or, if you shed a few tears for me,
and they, like clear morning dew
climbing down tender petals,
reach my parched throat,
I will rest for a while.

Do not leave the premises of my grateful glances.
In their hesitance they follow the sound of your feet
to be impeded by sudden timid boundaries.
Fear grips my abandoned ears.

I need a song!

In its tune should be written solitude’s death.
Twilight tinged with its dolorous melody.
Or, if you breathe so that I could hear,
and its sound, like full wet lips pressing against my chest,
seeps through my pores,
I will close my tired eyes.

Do not leave the echoes of your chiming laughter.
I know there’s a phone.
But the metal feels only just cold.
In the hunger of all my senses,

I need aroma!

The taste of your icy feet, the wet hair after your bath:
in their quest I need to break this dream.
Or, if the sweat of your soft warm breasts
soak the creases on my abandoned forehead,
and a thin stream of calm joy flows down
the hollow of my neck,
I will dream on in my sweet sleep.

Do not elude my feeble touch.

Come,
sit next to me, and see
how your blood is flowing through my veins.

An idiot, having carved your idol,
has fallen at your feet of his deity,
and prays:

I need love!

I have read this a couple times…it is so romantic, full of yearning and emotions – an immense tribute to love, a deep prayer. I can’t find the words to say what I actually mean that would fit the beauty of this poem properly.
    I love it.

Reply: Glad to see you on my blog again, Janice. I am overwhelmed by the words you have used to describe this poem: “tribute”, “prayer” …. but, well, that is what it is …. something so deep within my heart that it took me almost a week to take it out and form the words.
The strange effect that this poem had on me is that I was suffering from a strange pain till I penned this down. As soon as I had finished writing this, I realized that the pain had gone.

Oh! What a beautiful poem… rhythmic, soft, sensual. The flow is magical intertwined with “I need’s…”. Beautiful, beautiful. Thank you for this wonderful break!

One of my favorites for sure.

Reply: This is first poem in my life that I actually wrote FOR someone. My girlfriend …. the person whose opinion matters the most to me. She refused to judge this …. kept saying she doesn’t deserve it. And in a strange way, I found solace in that. That’s why, this is my favourite too.

I read it twice. At first i thot i was merely swept off my feelt due to its flow and romanticism. Later on i realised it has a divinity attached to it. the romantic beauty of the piece is so endearing it seems blasphemous to not like it. hehehe

neway………beautifullly written, well integrated, a modern romance with no sign of stagnance radiating an intoxicating freshness.

    r u a tagore fan??

Reply: I am the one to get swept off my feet on hearing words like divinity associated to my poem. I didn’t think of anything while writing it. It is simply a manifestation of my feelings at a certain point of time.

i read it again today….and its effect is everlasting….one more feeling i got to know u cherish….nonstalgia…my insticts tell me m rite….my logics tell me i aint wrng…

Reply: I think the reason why the effect is permanent is its inherent honesty. For there is nothing other than honesty in this poem.

a manifestation of feelings in its complete sense…yes..that itself can imbibe a divine peace….for me divinity is something that seems to surpass all the natural beauty around us that we call reality…….

Reply: That is a beautiful thing to say. Absolutely beautiful.

Ritwik that was beautiful! Tell your girlfriend since she inspired it, she deserves it ;). Seriously friend, it is a beautiful romantic poem. Well done.

Reply: 🙂 Thank you Harmonie! I will tell her that. I just hope to feel this intensity about other things as well . . . may be then I will become a proper poet!

I think you already are a proper poet; a poet is always ‘becoming,’ I think, ever-growing and experimenting with voices and styles. You write from the heart and out of a love of writing and that (aside from writing good poetry) is what makes you a proper poet!

Reply: You are an extremely encouraging reader and a beautiful person. I know I have said this before, but, “I am glad to have found you in the blogosphere!”

I cannot write more praise than has already been written about this honest show and feeling of honest emotion that has flown from your heart to our hearts via the medium of our computers than has already been expressed here.

I just wanted to add a thank you to you for sharing this beauty and evocotively moving piece with us here.

    Peace, love and tears.

Reply: I am as moved by your comment as you are by my poem. A poem is an expression. And it is lost without readers such as yourself.

This living hand, now warm and capable of earnest grasping,
would if it were cold and in the icy silence of the tomb,
so haunt thy days and chill thy dreaming nights
that thou wouldst wish thine own heart dry of blood
that in my veins red life might stream again.
Here it it. I hold it toward you.

This is what your poem calls to mind, Ritwik. John Keats. Good company.

Please drop by sometime. There’s formal poetry in honor of the new fall season.

I see that u have shifted your blog since the last time you tagged at the the thought revolution. =) beautiful poems you have here..

Just wondering, what are the things that inspires you to write?

Reply: I must have visited your blog from my earlier blog in blogspot. Thank you for dropping by here. And I am glad that you like my poems. As far as inspiration for writing is concerned, it comes from intense emotions. Be it love, pain, hope or despair . . . . whenever the intensity is high, I find myself sitting down with pen and paper (yes, I still use a pen and a paper for the first draft! 🙂 )

very interesting, but I don’t agree with you

Reply: It’s a poem. It’s not a matter of agreement. That is why it’s a poem. I would have written a discourse otherwise.
